How to Reduce Frizz

How to Reduce Frizz

Frizz isn't a hair type, it's often a sign that your hair is looking for moisture. Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly or coily, humidity, heat styling and everyday damage can all lift the hair cuticle and create that unwanted fluffy finish.

The secret to smoother hair isn't loading it with heavy products. It's choosing the right routine that hydrates, protects and seals the cuticle without weighing your hair down.

Why does hair go frizzy?

Each strand of hair is covered by a protective outer layer called the cuticle. When the cuticle lies flat, hair looks smooth and shiny. When it's raised, moisture from the air enters the strand, causing it to swell and creating frizz.

Common triggers include:

  • Humidity and wet weather
  • Dry or dehydrated hair
  • Heat styling without protection
  • Colouring or bleaching
  • Over-washing with harsh shampoos
  • Towel drying with rough fabrics

The drier your hair becomes, the more likely it is to frizz.

Step 1: Choose a moisturising shampoo

Your anti-frizz routine starts with cleansing. Sulphate-free, salon quality shampoos help remove build-up without stripping away the natural oils that keep hair smooth.

Hydrating ingredients like shea butter, camelina oil and ceramides help replenish moisture from the very first wash.

Step 2: Condition every wash

Conditioner is your best defence against frizz. It smooths the cuticle, improves manageability and helps lock hydration into the hair.

Apply it mainly through the mid-lengths and ends, then leave it on for two to three minutes before rinsing for the best results.

Step 3: Add a weekly moisture treatment

If your hair is consistently frizzy, it may be dehydrated.

A rich hair mask once a week provides intensive nourishment, leaving hair softer, shinier and easier to style. This is especially beneficial for colour-treated, curly or naturally dry hair.

Step 4: Never skip heat protection

Blow dryers and straighteners can quickly undo all that hydration if you style without protection.

A lightweight leave-in heat protectant helps reduce moisture loss, smooth the hair surface and protect against humidity throughout the day.

Step 5: Dry hair more gently

How you dry your hair matters just as much as the products you use.

Instead of rubbing with a towel:

  • Gently squeeze out excess water.
  • Use a microfibre towel or soft cotton T-shirt.
  • Blow dry using a nozzle attachment, directing airflow down the hair shaft.
  • Finish with a cool shot to help flatten the cuticle.

These small changes can make a noticeable difference to shine and smoothness.

Your simple anti-frizz routine

For hair that stays smoother for longer:

  1. Cleanse with a hydrating shampoo.
  2. Condition every wash.
  3. Treat with a moisture mask weekly.
  4. Protect with a leave-in heat protectant before styling.
  5. Finish with a smoothing serum or lightweight shine spray if needed.

Can you get rid of frizz permanently?

Frizz can't be permanently eliminated because it's influenced by your hair's condition and the environment. However, keeping hair well hydrated, minimising damage and using salon quality products can dramatically reduce frizz and make hair noticeably smoother, softer and more manageable every day.
